Wigmakers sewed complicated hair pieces and wigs by hand.
The shop in Williamsburg represents Edward Charlton, who practiced the trade for more than a half century and became one of the most important 18th-century wigmakers in Virginia. Many important men in Virginia, such as Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and George Wythe frequented his shop.

They add fine sand to the wigs to soak up the oils.
They did not wash there hair very often.

Bio- Richard Charlton arrived in Williamsburg in 1760 . He worked as a wigmaker and a coffeehouse owner.In the late 1765 the porch of the coffeehouse was the scence of Willamsburg's protest against The Stamp Act.Richard Carlton died in Richmond in 1779.
